The Definition

SPC is a material before it is a floor

SPC is the abbreviation of Stone Plastic Composite (also read as Stone Polymer Composite). It names the core layer of a modern rigid vinyl floor: limestone powder bound with polyvinyl chloride and stabilisers, extruded into a dense, rigid board. The word order matters — stone first — because the mineral content is what defines the material's behaviour.

That behaviour is the reason SPC took over the vinyl category. A mineral core cannot absorb water, so an SPC floor is 100% waterproof by construction, not by coating. It is dense, so it resists dents and bridges small subfloor imperfections. And it barely moves with temperature, so wide rooms and sunny fronts do not open gaps the way softer floors can.

On top of the core, a finished SPC floor adds a printed decor layer, a transparent wear layer rated up to AC5, a UV-cured top coat and — on MILAT floors — an Embossed In Register (EIR) surface pressed in exact register with the printed grain, plus a pre-attached IXPE acoustic layer and a licensed Unilin click. The material is the foundation; the engineering above it decides the quality.

Key Features

What the Stone Plastic Composite core changes

Waterproof by construction

Limestone and polymer cannot swell. Waterproofing is a property of the core itself, not a surface treatment that can wear off.

Rigidity you can feel

The dense board stays flat under load, resists dents from furniture and heels, and hides minor subfloor flaws that flexible vinyl would telegraph.

Dimensional stability

Minimal expansion and contraction across temperature swings — the reason SPC handles conservatories, shopfronts and underfloor-heated rooms with confidence.

A base for real texture

A stable core lets the EIR press land deep, aligned texture on the decor — wood grain you can feel exactly where you see it.

Fast, reversible fitting

Rigid boards carry a licensed Unilin click: planks angle in, lock tool-free and can be lifted again for repairs or reconfiguration.

Quiet mass

Density plus a pre-attached IXPE layer absorbs impact sound up to 21 dB — a solid, quiet footfall rather than a hollow knock.

Where It Works

Where the material earns its keep

Wet rooms

Bathrooms, kitchens and laundries — the core simply does not care about water.

Heavy traffic

Retail, hospitality and offices, where AC5 wear ratings and dent resistance decide floor life.

Renovations

Rigid boards float over most sound existing hard floors with minimal preparation.

Temperature swings

Sun-facing rooms and seasonal spaces where stability prevents gapping and peaking.

Whole buildings

One waterproof specification from entrance to wet room, without switching materials.

Projects & OEM

A material stable enough to be produced in custom colours and sizes for contract programmes.

FAQ

SPC — Stone Plastic Composite — frequently asked questions

What does SPC stand for?+

SPC stands for Stone Plastic Composite (sometimes Stone Polymer Composite) — a rigid flooring core made mainly of limestone powder bound with polymer.

Is SPC plastic or stone?+

Both, by design: the core is predominantly limestone mineral held in a polymer matrix. The stone content gives rigidity and stability; the polymer binds it and makes it workable.

Is SPC the same as vinyl flooring?+

SPC is a category within vinyl flooring. All SPC is vinyl, but not all vinyl is SPC — sheet vinyl and flexible LVT use softer constructions without the rigid mineral core.

What is the difference between SPC and LVT?+

LVT describes the finished luxury vinyl tile or plank; SPC describes the rigid core inside the newest generation of it. A MILAT floor is LVT built on an SPC core.

Why is SPC waterproof?+

Because the core is mineral and polymer, neither of which absorbs water. Waterproofing is built into the material rather than applied to its surface.

Is SPC suitable for underfloor heating?+

SPC's dimensional stability makes it well suited to gentle water-based underfloor heating when installed to the system's guidance — follow the installation instructions for temperature limits.

Who manufactures SPC in Türkiye?+

MILAT Floor manufactures SPC flooring end to end in Başpınar OSB, Gaziantep — 54 designs across three EIR collections, exported worldwide.

How do I specify a good SPC floor?+

Check the wear layer and AC rating for your traffic, insist on a licensed click system, and ask for FloorScore® and CE documentation in the manufacturer's own name.
