What Is the Unilin Click System?

The Belgian invention behind glueless floating floors, and why the license on the box matters.

Most floating floors sold today snap together without a drop of glue. That mechanism traces back to one Belgian company, Unilin, which developed glueless click locking and now licenses the technology to flooring makers around the world. If you have ever heard a plank make a satisfying snap as it seats into the last one, you have used a click joint that owes its design to Unilin.

Where the click system came from

Before glueless click, floating floors were held together with glue in the joint or nailed to the subfloor. Both were slow and messy, and mistakes were hard to undo. Unilin's breakthrough was a machined profile that lets one plank hook mechanically into the next, so the joint holds itself closed under normal foot traffic. No adhesive, no fasteners.

How the joint actually locks

Each plank has a tongue milled into one edge and a matching groove on the other. You present a plank at a slight angle to the row already down, then lower it, and the profiles fold and lock together. Short ends often use a drop-lock or push-down action instead. The two families you will hear about most:

  • Angle / fold-down: tilt the plank in and press it flat; the long edge locks as it drops.
  • Drop-lock (drop & lock): the end joint clicks down vertically once the long edge is engaged, handy in tight spaces against a wall.
  • The finished joint resists horizontal pull and vertical lift, which is what keeps gaps from opening over time.

Why a licensed Unilin click matters

A locking profile looks simple in a diagram, but the tolerances are not. A licensed Unilin click is cut to a proven, tested geometry, so the joints seat tightly, stay closed, and can be taken apart and reused without chewing up the edges. Uncredited copies often loosen the tolerances to dodge the license, and that is where you get joints that gap, peak, or crack on the second install.

  • Proven engineering: the profile is validated for repeated locking, not reverse-engineered by eye.
  • Tight, durable joints: less chance of gaps, height differences (peaking), or edge damage.

Installing with a licensed click: technique matters

A click floor rewards rhythm more than force. Long edges engage at an angle and fold down; short ends lock with a firm press or a gentle tap on a tapping block, never a bare hammer on the plank edge. The most common installer error is forcing a misaligned joint, which bruises the locking lip and leaves a gap that reappears forever after. Work in the sequence the instructions show, keep the first rows dead straight because every later row copies them, and clear grit from the groove before closing each joint. Speed comes from precision, not from hitting harder.

Why subfloor flatness makes or breaks the joint

The click mechanism assumes the two planks it joins are in the same plane. Lay it over a hump or a hollow and the joint is asked to bend, a job it was never designed for; under foot traffic that flexing works the lock loose and announces itself as creaks and gaps. This is why installation instructions state a flatness tolerance and mean it. Checking with a straightedge and levelling the low spots is dull work that determines whether the elegant Belgian engineering in the joint gets to operate as designed or spends its life under strain.

How a factory keeps a click profile honest

Licensing the geometry is step one; milling it correctly, plank after plank, is the daily work. The profile is cut into the SPC core by rows of precision tooling, and fractions of a millimetre decide whether joints close with a crisp, confident action or fight the installer. No. Unilin develops and licenses the locking technology; the floors you buy come from manufacturers who license that click and put their own brand on the plank.

Does a Unilin click need glue?

No. The whole point of the system is a glueless mechanical joint. The planks lock to each other and float over the subfloor.

Can I take a click floor apart again?

Yes, if the joints are cut properly. A licensed click can usually be unlocked plank by plank and relaid, which is how you swap a damaged board.

How do I know a floor uses a genuine licensed click?

Reputable makers state it in the spec sheet or on the box. If a supplier is vague about the locking system, treat that as a flag.

Is a licensed click stronger than a generic one?
