A floating floor is not attached to the subfloor beneath it. Instead of nails or glue, the planks lock to each other and the whole surface simply rests in place, held down by its own weight and the tension of the locked joints. The name throws people off; the floor does not bounce or move around. It just is not bonded to what is underneath, and that one difference shapes almost everything about how it installs and lives.

Held by joints and gravity
Each plank connects to its neighbours along a locking edge, usually a click profile. Once a room is laid, those interlocked planks form one large, connected sheet sitting on the subfloor. Nothing pins it down, so it can expand and contract as a unit when temperature and humidity shift. That is the reason a floating floor is designed the way it is.
Why the expansion gap matters
Because the floor moves as one piece, it needs somewhere to go. Installers leave a small gap, typically a few millimetres, around the entire perimeter of the room and around fixed objects like pipes and door frames. Skirting boards or trim hide the gap. Skip it, and a floor that expands into a wall has nowhere to move but up, which shows as buckling or peaking joints.
The role of underlay
A thin underlay usually goes between the subfloor and the planks. It smooths out minor bumps, adds a little cushioning, and dampens sound so footsteps are quieter, both in the room and to the space below. Some planks arrive with a pad already bonded to the back, in which case a separate underlay is often unnecessary. MILAT's SPC, for instance, carries an IXPE acoustic backing rated up to 21 dB.
Pros and cons
- Fast to install, with no adhesive or fasteners.
- Repairs are easier: lift and replace planks rather than prying up a bonded floor.
- Often removable and reusable if the joints are good quality.
- Tolerant of many existing subfloors when flat.
- Downside: needs an expansion gap and a flat base to sit right.
- Downside: cheaper systems can feel slightly hollow without good underlay.

How floating became the default
For most of flooring history, everything was fixed down: nailed timber, glued parquet, bedded tile. The floating concept arrived with laminate in the late twentieth century and spread because it solved a renovation problem: you could lay a new floor over an old one in a day, without wet trades, and without destroying what was beneath. Click joints then removed the glue bottle from the equation, and licensed systems like Unilin turned the joint into precision engineering rather than a friction fit. Today floating is the default for laminate, SPC and much LVT, and fixed-down methods survive where they genuinely earn their place rather than by habit.
When gluing down is still the right call
A floating floor is not the answer to everything, and knowing the exceptions makes you a smarter buyer. Very large open areas without breaks push floating floors toward their movement limits. Heavy rolling loads, hospital beds, retail cage trolleys, forklifts in back rooms, work joints in ways a bonded floor resists better. Ramps and inclines want the certainty of adhesive. And some refurbishments need the lowest possible build height, which thin glue-down LVT delivers. For homes, guestrooms, offices and most retail floors, floating wins on speed, cost of installation and reversibility; the point is to choose deliberately, not by default.
Repairs: the floating floor's quiet superpower
Because nothing is bonded, a floating floor can be opened like a book. Damage a plank in the middle of the room and the repair is mechanical: lift the skirting at the nearest wall, unclick rows back to the casualty, swap it, and relay the same planks. No solvents, no patching compounds, no colour-matching a repair into a worn field, provided you kept spare planks from the original batch. This is also why floating floors suit rentals and hotels, where floors must be returned to new condition repeatedly. The discipline it asks of you is small: store a box of leftovers somewhere dry and remember which room they belong to.
The rules fixed objects impose
- Kitchen units and islands go on the subfloor first, with flooring cut around them and a gap left
- Never screw or nail anything through a floating floor; door stops and fixings belong in the subfloor with clearance holes
- Radiator pipes need collars with room to move, not planks cut tight to the copper
- Heavy safes, aquariums and loaded shelving act like walls; plan gaps around them
- Ordinary furniture is fine; it slides with the floor rather than pinning it
What a floating floor sounds like, and how to control it
The classic complaint about early floating floors was acoustic: a hard shell over an air film can drum underfoot and telegraph impact noise downstairs. The industry's answer was to put the damping directly on the plank. An attached acoustic layer, like the IXPE bonded to MILAT SPC with absorption up to 21 dB, closes the gap between shell and subfloor, deadens the footfall note and improves how the floor feels underfoot. Flatness does the rest: hollow spots under a floating floor are almost always subfloor dips, not product faults. A well-prepped slab plus an attached underlay gets a floating floor surprisingly close to the solid sound of a bonded one.
