SPC vs Hybrid Flooring

In many markets, SPC is a hybrid — the core inside is what matters.

Hybrid flooring can be a confusing label, because in many markets SPC is a hybrid. The term — popular in Australia and parts of Asia — describes rigid-core boards that blend the look of laminate with the waterproofing of vinyl. Under that umbrella you'll find both SPC and WPC cores, and the difference between them matters more than the marketing word.

What does hybrid flooring actually mean?

Hybrid is a category, not a single product. It covers multi-layer, rigid, waterproof planks that click together and float. SPC (stone plastic composite) and WPC (wood plastic composite) are the two main cores sold as hybrid. When a retailer says hybrid, your first question should be which core is inside, because that determines density, warmth, and dent resistance.

SPC vs WPC — the core that's usually inside

WPC uses a foamed core with wood-like fillers, making it thicker, softer, and warmer underfoot. SPC uses a dense mineral core, making it thinner, harder, and more stable under heat and heavy loads. WPC trades some dent resistance for cushioning; SPC trades a little softness for toughness and dimensional stability.

Heat and dimensional stability

Rooms with big windows or underfloor heating expose the weak spot of foamed cores. WPC expands and contracts more with temperature swings. SPC's mineral density keeps it steadier, which is why it's the more common pick for sunlit rooms and over radiant heat. A quality UV coating — MILAT uses a 2X UV coating — also helps the surface resist fading in bright rooms.

Comfort and sound

If barefoot comfort tops your list, WPC's give is noticeable. SPC answers with an acoustic layer rather than a soft core; an attached IXPE layer cuts footfall noise while keeping the board firm and stable. The result is quiet without the dent penalty.

Which hybrid is right for you?

For high traffic, sunny rooms, radiant heat, or commercial spaces, SPC is the safer hybrid. Choose WPC when a softer, warmer step matters and the room stays climate-stable. And if a supplier only says hybrid, pin down the core, wear layer, and click system before comparing prices — those specs, not the label, tell you what you're buying.

Same product, different shelf label

Walk into a Melbourne flooring shop and the wall says hybrid. Walk into a Rotterdam or Manchester showroom and the identical board is labelled SPC or rigid vinyl. The naming split is commercial history, not chemistry: Australian retailers coined hybrid to signal a product between laminate and vinyl, while Europe and North America kept the engineering names. For an importer this matters, because a supplier search using only your local term will miss half the world's factories. Search both, and judge the spec sheet, not the shelf talker.

How to read a hybrid spec sheet

Once you ignore the label, five lines on the datasheet tell you nearly everything. Check them in this order and most marketing fog clears.

  • Core type: SPC (stone polymer) or WPC (wood polymer), because it drives stability and feel
  • Wear layer thickness and rating, ideally with an AC class such as AC4 or AC5
  • Click system: a licensed profile like Unilin signals engineered, tested joints
  • Attached underlay: material and acoustic performance, such as IXPE with a stated dB reduction
  • Certificates: CE Declaration of Performance and an indoor-air label such as FloorScore

The click joint is where cheap hybrids fail

Cores and wear layers get all the attention, but the joint is what holds a floating floor together through years of trolleys, chairs and seasonal movement. Unlicensed copy profiles are milled to looser tolerances; they assemble easily and loosen just as easily, and a gapped joint is the beginning of every water and dirt problem a floating floor can have. A licensed system, like the Unilin profile MILAT machines into every plank, is cut to the licensor's tolerances and tested for pull strength. It is an invisible spec that decides how the floor looks in year five.

Weight is a clue, not a verdict

Buyers sometimes heft two sample boards and assume the heavier one is better. Density does correlate with indentation resistance in SPC cores, so a suspiciously light board deserves questions. But weight alone can also mean crude filler loading rather than a well-dispersed limestone-polymer mix. The honest tests are performance numbers: residual indentation, dimensional stability after heat cycling, and joint strength. Ask for the test report behind the CE declaration rather than weighing planks in your hand.

A manufacturer's view of the hybrid boom

From the factory side, the hybrid label was a gift and a hazard. A gift because it re-introduced rigid vinyl to shoppers who had dismissed old flexible vinyl; a hazard because it lets vague products hide behind a fashionable word. The floors that keep reordering, in any market and under any name, share the same anatomy: a dense SPC core, an honest wear layer, a licensed click, an attached acoustic pad and full documentation. Everything else is packaging.

Test the sample like a sceptic

Whatever a board is called, a physical sample answers questions a datasheet dodges. Click two planks together and pull them apart a few times: the joint should engage with a definite bite and separate without fraying. Flex the plank gently; a rigid core resists, a soft one telegraphs cheapness immediately. Score the surface with a key and see whether the mark catches the light or disappears into the texture. Leave a sample half-submerged in a glass of water for a few days and inspect the edges. Stand it against a window and check the print at an angle for plastic sheen. Ten minutes of mild abuse tells you more than an afternoon of brochures.

Is SPC a hybrid floor?

Yes. SPC is one of the two main rigid cores sold under the hybrid label, alongside WPC. In Australia especially, most flooring marketed as hybrid is SPC.

What's the difference between SPC and WPC hybrid?

SPC has a dense stone-based core that's harder and more heat-stable; WPC has a foamed wood-based core that's softer and warmer. SPC resists dents better, WPC feels more cushioned.

Is hybrid flooring fully waterproof?

Rigid hybrid cores don't swell from surface water, so spills and mopping are fine. As with any floating floor, avoid letting water sit in the seams for long periods.

Can hybrid flooring go over underfloor heating?

SPC-core hybrids handle radiant heat well within the manufacturer's temperature limit. Foamed WPC cores are more sensitive, so check the spec sheet first.

Is hybrid the same as laminate?

No. Laminate has a wood-fibre core that can swell if water penetrates. Hybrid uses a waterproof rigid vinyl core, so it tolerates moisture that would ruin laminate.

Does hybrid flooring scratch easily?

Scratch resistance comes from the wear layer and surface coating, not the core. Look for a high AC rating and a quality UV finish rather than the hybrid label.

Why is the same floor called hybrid in Australia and SPC in Europe?

It is purely a retail naming convention. Australian shops branded rigid-core vinyl as hybrid flooring; European and American markets kept the technical names SPC and rigid LVT. The construction underneath is the same, so compare datasheets rather than labels.

Is a heavier hybrid board always the better one?

Not automatically. Higher density usually helps indentation resistance, but weight alone does not prove a well-made core. Judge boards on tested numbers: indentation, dimensional stability and click strength, all of which appear in a proper test report.

Does the click profile really differ between hybrid brands?

Significantly. Licensed systems such as Unilin are milled to controlled tolerances and tested for joint strength; generic copies often assemble loosely and open up over time. It is one of the clearest quality separators between look-alike boards.
