SPC Flooring Myths, Corrected

Half of what buyers hear about SPC is outdated, and some of it was never true. A manufacturer sets the record straight — including where SPC genuinely has limits.

Every popular product accumulates folklore, and SPC has its share — some inherited from old vinyl, some invented by competitors, some by over-enthusiastic sellers. As a manufacturer, we have heard them all. Here are the most common myths, what is actually true, and the honest limits nobody should paper over.

Myth 1: Vinyl flooring is toxic

This one is inherited from another era. Modern certified SPC is independently tested for indoor air quality: FloorScore certification verifies low VOC emissions against strict limits. Buy certified product and the air-quality question is answered by a laboratory, not a salesperson.

Myth 2: Waterproof means indestructible

The plank is 100% waterproof — water cannot swell or delaminate it. But waterproof does not mean the floor protects your building: standing water can still find walls and subfloors around it, and no wear layer is immune to dragged furniture or grit. Waterproof is a material property, not a force field.

Myth 3: Thicker is always better

Thickness is a design parameter, not a quality score. A well-made plank with the right wear layer outperforms a thicker plank with a poor core recipe or a soft wear surface. Judge the wear class, the core quality and the click — then choose thickness for the application.

Myth 4: All click systems are the same

The click is patented engineering, and the difference between a licensed profile and an imitation is measured in tolerances you cannot see on a stand — but will feel in every joint for years. Ask which licence the floor is built on. MILAT builds on a licensed Unilin click.

Myth 5: SPC feels cold and cheap

Bare mineral core would — which is why quality SPC attaches an IXPE layer that warms and quietens the floor, and presses an EIR texture that reads as timber underhand. The 'plastic feel' belongs to flat-embossed budget product, not to the category.

Myth 6: SPC cannot go over underfloor heating

SPC works over water-based underfloor heating within the manufacturer's temperature limits — its dimensional stability actually suits gentle, even heat. The real rule is to follow the stated maximum surface temperature and the system guidance, not to avoid the pairing.

Myth 7: It is just cheap laminate

Laminate has a wood-fibre core that swells when water reaches it; SPC has a mineral core that cannot. They share click installation and a printed design — the resemblance ends at the first spill. Where the two compete honestly is dry living areas, and there the choice is preference and budget.

Myth 8: Hard floors are dangerously slippery

People picture polished tiles and transfer the fear. SPC's surface is textured, and EIR embossing in particular leaves a micro-relief that gives shoes and bare feet something to grip, unlike glass-smooth gloss finishes. Dry, a textured matte SPC floor is grippier than most tile. Wet, every hard floor deserves respect, and the sensible measures are the same ones used everywhere: mats at doorways, bath mats at tubs, and wiping spills rather than skating through them. Slip performance belongs on the spec sheet as a tested property, so specifiers for commercial spaces should simply ask for it.

Myth 9: You cannot refinish it, so it is disposable

The premise is true and the conclusion is not. No, SPC cannot be sanded and re-oiled like solid timber. But refinishing exists because wood surfaces wear out and need rescue; SPC's answer is a wear layer and UV coating engineered not to need rescuing within the floor's design life. And where wood is refinished by closing the room for days of sanding and dust, a damaged SPC plank is simply exchanged for a spare thanks to the click system. Repairability by replacement is a different maintenance philosophy, not the absence of one.

Myth 10: Floating floors always feel hollow and bouncy

This myth is earned by thin laminate over cheap sponge underlay, which really can feel like walking on a drum. Rigid SPC changes both variables: the dense mineral core has none of laminate's lightness, and a factory-attached IXPE layer couples the plank to the subfloor instead of bouncing on loose foam. Laid on a properly flattened substrate, click SPC feels firm and sounds dull underfoot, which is precisely the point of the attached pad. Where an SPC floor does drum, the diagnosis is almost always subfloor hollows, not the product category.

Myth 11: The cheapest SPC is the same product anyway

From a factory's side of the table, this is the most expensive myth on the list. Two planks with identical photos can differ in filler ratio, wear layer thickness, whether the click geometry is licensed or copied, coating quality, and whether the certificates are real, current, and in the seller's name. None of that is visible in a listing image; all of it is visible in year three. The rational way to buy cheap is to compare full specifications and certification and then take the lowest price among genuine equals, which is a different exercise from taking the lowest price.

Why flooring folklore refuses to die

Flooring myths persist because floors outlive product generations. A homeowner burned by curling sheet vinyl in one decade warns their children off all vinyl in the next, and a fitter who once fought a badly copied click swears off click floors entirely. Sellers of competing materials keep the stories in circulation because fear is cheap marketing. The antidote has not changed: judge the floor in front of you by its spec sheet, its certificates, and a sample in your own hands, not by the reputation of something that shared a word with it thirty years ago.
