Understanding SPC Flooring Thickness

What the millimetres control, and the spec that matters more.

Thickness is the number shoppers fixate on, and it is also one of the most misunderstood specs on the box. A thicker plank is not automatically a better plank. Here is what the millimetres actually control, and what to look at instead.

What the thickness number includes

Overall plank thickness measures the whole board, core plus any attached backing. That total is different from the wear layer, which is the thin clear layer on top that resists abrasion. Two planks can share the same overall thickness while performing very differently, because durability lives in the wear layer, not the core depth. Read both numbers, and do not let one stand in for the other.

These are broad industry ranges, not any single maker's spec. Confirm exact figures against the specific product guidance for the floor you are considering.

What thicker actually gets you

Added thickness changes the experience more than the endurance. The honest list of what it improves:

  • Underfoot feel: thicker, denser boards feel more solid and less hollow.
  • Sound: more mass, especially with an attached acoustic backing, dampens footstep noise.
  • Forgiveness: a thicker board bridges minor subfloor imperfections slightly better, though it never removes the need for a flat base.
  • Joint strength: taller click profiles can lock more securely on some systems.

What it does not do: a thick core will not stop surface scratches. That job belongs to the wear layer and finish.

Choosing thickness without overspending

Match the number to the room rather than buying the biggest figure on the shelf:

  • Quiet bedrooms and light-use rooms rarely need the thickest option.
  • Kitchens, hallways, and living areas do well in the mid range, where feel and cost balance.
  • Upstairs rooms and flats benefit from more mass or a good acoustic backing for quieter footsteps.
  • Commercial or very busy spaces justify the thickest planks, but only alongside a high wear rating.

The spec that matters more than thickness

If you only compare one number, compare wear layers, not overall thickness. A mid-thickness plank with a robust, high-AC wear layer will outlast a thick plank with a thin top layer in any busy room. Thickness shapes comfort and acoustics; the wear layer decides how the floor looks after years of traffic. Get the wear layer right first, then pick the thickness that feels good and fits the budget.

Density beats millimetres

Two boards can measure identical on a calliper and behave nothing alike, because what resists a stiletto heel or a fridge foot is the density of the stone-polymer core, not its depth. A well-compressed SPC core with a high, evenly dispersed limestone content holds its shape under point loads; a foamy, filler-heavy core dents no matter how thick it is. If you can only ask a supplier one question beyond thickness, ask for the core density and the residual indentation result. Those two numbers predict real-world behaviour better than the headline millimetres ever will.

What thickness means for the click joint

The click profile is milled into the core, so the core has to leave enough material above and below the joint for it to hold. Very thin boards leave the tongue slender, which punishes careless installation and repeated disassembly. Thicker boards carry a fuller profile that clicks with a more definite lock and forgives more site handling. This is one of the few arguments where thickness genuinely earns its keep, and it is also why a licensed geometry such as Unilin, machined to tight tolerances, matters most at the thinner end of the range.

Doorways, appliances and the renovation build-up

In renovation, thickness is mostly a clearance question. Every extra millimetre raises the finished floor: doors may need trimming, appliances must still slide under counters, and transitions to tiled or carpeted rooms need matching heights. Going over existing tile compounds it. Measure your critical clearances before choosing a board, not after. A thinner plank with an attached IXPE pad often lands at a build-up that keeps every door untouched, which saves more money and mess than any spec upgrade costs.

Thickness and the wholesale calculation

Container buyers feel thickness in a way homeowners never do: it sets weight and cube. Thicker boards mean fewer square metres per pallet and per container, so the same shipment covers less floor. That flows through freight, warehousing and shelf price. This is why professional buyers spec thickness to the application instead of defaulting upward: a corridor of AC5-rated wear layer on a sensible core outperforms a thicker board with a thin wear layer, and ships more area for the same freight.

Tolerance is a quality signal

A stated thickness is a target; the question is how tightly the factory holds it. Sloppy calibration shows up as lippage between planks, clicks that seat inconsistently, and a floor that telegraphs every joint in low light. Consistent gauge across a batch, and between batches ordered months apart, is the quiet evidence of a controlled line. It is the kind of discipline ISO 9001 process control exists to enforce, and it is worth checking on a physical sample: measure several planks from different boxes and see how close they run.

Read the cross-section, not just the number

A plank's cut edge is its honest biography. Look at a sample end-on in good light and the layers separate: the wear layer as a thin clear film on top, the printed decor beneath it, the stone-polymer core making up the bulk, and the attached IXPE pad underneath. Sellers sometimes quote total thickness in a way that lets a fat pad flatter a thin core, so identify how much of the number is core and how much is cushioning. A magnifying glass and a ruler on the cross-section will settle any dispute between two datasheets, and a supplier who sends cut samples willingly has usually got nothing to hide in the sandwich.
