How to Install SPC Wall Panels

A glue-down wall panel goes up in hours when the wall, the room and the adhesive are right. Here is the sequence MILAT recommends for its 4 mm SPC wall panels.

SPC wall panels are bonded, not floated: a 4 mm plank is glued vertically onto a sound, flat wall with a solvent-free MS polymer adhesive, cut to size with a utility knife or jigsaw and wiped down when the wall is done. There is no plaster, no tile adhesive and no grout, so the job is mostly preparation. Get the wall dry and level, let the panels acclimatise, set the first panel plumb, and the rest follows.

Why SPC wall panels are glued, not clicked

A floor floats because gravity holds it down; a wall has no such help. MILAT's 4 mm SPC wall panels are therefore bonded over their whole back with an MS polymer adhesive, which grips the rigid stone-polymer core and stays flexible enough to absorb minor movement in the wall. The 300 × 600 mm click tile is the exception and follows its own guidance.

The three conditions that decide the result

  • Moisture: a wall reading over 2% will keep pushing vapour at the adhesive line — dry it first or treat the cause.
  • Temperature: 15–25 °C before, during and after fitting keeps the adhesive curing as designed and the panel at its working size.
  • Flatness: the rigid core bridges small dips but not humps; a level wall gives tight joints and a flat run.

Choosing the adhesive

Use a solvent-free MS polymer adhesive sold for SPC or PVC wall panels. Solvent-based products can attack the core and the decor layer; water-based wood glues do not bond to a mineral-polymer surface. Apply it to the back of the panel with a caulking gun and follow the adhesive maker's open time — in a warm room it is shorter than you expect.

Cutting without damage

A 4 mm SPC panel scores and snaps with a utility knife along a straight edge; curves and cut-outs are best done with a jigsaw on a fine blade. Support the panel fully while cutting so the decor layer does not chip, and cut decor-side up.

3D panels

MILAT's 3D relief panels — Model A at 24 mm and Model B at 14 mm — are also glue-down and follow the same preparation. Because they are narrow planks (160 and 186 mm wide, 2750 mm long), set out the wall so that any cut plank sits at the edge and the relief pattern stays continuous across the field.

Living with the wall

The surface is closed and non-porous: a damp cloth and a mild cleaner are enough. There is no grout to discolour and nothing to re-seal. In showers, keep the perimeter detailing intact and the wall behind the panel stays dry.

Step by step

  1. 01

    Gather the tools

Spirit level, tape measure, pencil, a fine-tooth saw or jigsaw, a utility knife, a caulking gun, a clean cloth, alcohol for degreasing, and a solvent-free MS polymer panel adhesive.

  2. 02

Check the room and the wall

Wall moisture must be below 2% and the room between 15 and 25 °C before, during and after installation. The wall has to be clean, dry, dust-free and level: remove grease and old adhesive, fill or sand uneven spots, then clean the surface.

  3. 03

    Measure and allow for waste

Measure the height and width of each wall and add 5–10% for cutting waste. Order the full quantity from one batch so the decor matches across the room.

  4. 04

    Plan the layout

Set out the panel positions by width so that cut panels fall evenly at both ends rather than one narrow strip in a corner. Mark plumb vertical guidelines with the spirit level.

  5. 05

    Acclimatise the panels

Store the cartons flat, in the room, at room temperature for 48 hours before fitting. Check every panel for transport damage before you glue it.

  6. 06

    Fit the first panel

Panels go up vertically, perpendicular to the floor. Apply the adhesive to the back of the panel, position it on the guideline and check it with the level before pressing it home — every later panel follows this one.

  7. 07

    Measure, mark and cut

Measure each panel in place, mark it and cut with a utility knife, a jigsaw or a suitable fine-tooth saw. Cut outlets and corners before gluing, not after.

  8. 08

    Work across the wall

Continue panel by panel, keeping each one tight to the last and checking plumb every few panels. Finish perimeters and wet-room joints according to the product's installation guidance so the wall behind stays dry.

  9. 09

    Clean down

Once the wall is complete, wipe the panels with a clean, damp cloth to remove dust and adhesive residue. The surface needs no sealing, waxing or grout cleaning afterwards.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do SPC wall panels need to be glued?

Yes. The 4 mm plank and the 3D formats are glue-down, bonded over the whole back with a solvent-free MS polymer adhesive. Only the 300 × 600 mm click tile locks mechanically.

Which adhesive works for SPC wall panels?

A solvent-free MS polymer adhesive sold for SPC or PVC wall panels. Avoid solvent-based products and ordinary wood glue.

How long should SPC wall panels acclimatise?

48 hours, stored flat in the room at 15–25 °C, before installation.

What wall conditions are required?

Clean, dry, dust-free and level, with wall moisture below 2%. Fill or sand uneven areas and remove grease or old adhesive first.

How much extra should I order?

Add 5–10% to the measured wall area for cutting waste, and order from a single batch.

Can SPC wall panels go in a shower?

Yes — the core does not absorb water. Finish joints and perimeters according to the product's installation guidance so the wall behind stays dry.

How do I cut an SPC wall panel?

Score and snap with a utility knife along a straight edge, or use a jigsaw with a fine blade for curves and cut-outs. Cut decor-side up with the panel fully supported.

Does the wall need sealing after installation?

No. Wipe the panels with a clean, damp cloth to remove dust and adhesive residue; the surface needs no sealer, wax or grout maintenance.
