Acclimating is just letting the planks sit in the room where they'll live until they're the same temperature as that space. SPC is far more stable than laminate or engineered wood, but it still moves a little with heat, and a boxful of planks straight off a cold truck is not at room temperature. Lay them before they've settled and the floor keeps adjusting after it's down — which shows up as gaps or peaked joints weeks later. It costs you nothing but a bit of patience.

Why it matters even for rigid SPC
The core reacts mostly to temperature rather than humidity, so SPC needs less babysitting than wood. But planks delivered in winter or stored in a hot van arrive well off room temperature. Install them like that and they'll shrink or grow as they equalise, working the joints while the floor is already locked together. A day of acclimation lets that movement happen before, not after.
The conditions to hit
The idea is to install into the temperature the room will normally sit at. Typical best practice is to let the boxes rest in the installation room for around 48 hours at a normal, lived-in room temperature, with any heating or cooling running as it will in use. - Acclimating in a garage or hallway instead of the actual room
- Leaving boxes stacked and sealed so the middle cartons never adjust
- Installing into an unheated shell you'll heat later
- Standing planks against a cold outside wall
- Rushing — laying the same day the delivery lands
Then install into those conditions
The point of acclimating is undone if you lay the floor and then change the environment. Keep the room at that same working temperature during and after the install. On underfloor heating, don't fire it from cold to hot the moment you finish — ramp it up gradually.

Winter deliveries: the cold-truck problem
The harshest acclimation scenario is a winter delivery. Planks that have spent a day in an unheated truck arrive far below room temperature, and a cold SPC plank is at its most brittle exactly when handlers are tempted to unload it quickly. Do not install, and ideally do not even unbox aggressively, until the material has warmed through. Stack the boxes flat in the heated room and give them longer than you would in mild weather; the core of a full pallet warms slowly from the outside in. Rushing this step is behind a surprising share of click-profile damage blamed on the product.
Summer has its own trap
Hot-climate deliveries invert the problem. Planks coming out of a baking container or van are expanded, and if you install them at their largest, they will contract in the air-conditioned room and can open hairline gaps at the joints. The fix is the same discipline in reverse: let the boxes settle to the room's normal running temperature before laying. That last phrase matters. Acclimate to the conditions the room will actually live at with its cooling running, not to a closed-up site that is temporarily hotter than the building will ever be once occupied.
New builds: the wet-trades timing question
On new construction, acclimation collides with sequencing. A freshly poured screed releases moisture for weeks, plastering raises humidity, and unglazed or unheated shells swing with the weather. SPC itself does not absorb water, but the room conditions still drive its thermal movement, and trapped construction moisture can cause problems under any floating floor. The rule: SPC goes in after wet trades are finished, the building is closed, and the heating or cooling can hold the room at service conditions. Acclimating planks in a shell that is still drying is not acclimation; it is storing them at the wrong numbers.
Renovations are easier, but not automatic
Replacing a floor in a lived-in home is the friendly case: the room is already at its normal temperature and the subfloor has years of stability behind it. Even so, two habits still matter. First, bring the boxes into the actual room, not the garage or a cold hallway, because those spaces defeat the purpose. Second, if the renovation includes new heating, big glazing changes or underfloor heating, treat the room as new: run the system to its normal settings for a period before and during acclimation so the planks meet the conditions they will really live with.
Acclimation is really about the floor's whole life
It helps to see acclimation not as a pre-install ritual but as the first day of the floor's thermal life. A floating SPC floor spends years expanding and contracting slightly with the seasons; the expansion gap, the door thresholds and the acclimation period are all one system for absorbing that movement. Bring the boxes into the actual room
Move the planks into the exact room they'll be installed in — not a garage, van or hallway. Those spaces sit at different temperatures and defeat the point.

Set the room to its normal temperature
Get the room to the temperature it'll usually be lived in and keep it there. If there's underfloor heating, have it running at its normal working level.

Lay the cartons flat and give them air
Stack the boxes flat and low, and split large stacks so the middle cartons aren't insulated by the ones around them. Keep them off cold outside walls.

Wait the recommended time
Leave them undisturbed for the period MILAT specifies — commonly around 48 hours as general practice. Don't start cutting early because the top box feels fine.

Check before you open up
The planks should feel the same temperature as the room, not cold or warm to the touch. If the room only just reached temperature, give it longer.

Install and hold the conditions
