How to Clean & Maintain SPC Flooring

Everyday cleaning

• Sweep, dust-mop or vacuum (hard-floor setting) to lift grit that can scratch the surface.
• Damp-mop with clean water or a pH-neutral floor cleaner — SPC is waterproof, so a damp mop is fine.
• Wipe spills promptly to keep the surface clear, even though the core will not be damaged by water.

What to avoid

• Abrasive pads, scouring powders or steel wool that can dull the surface.
• Wax, polish or oil-soap products — SPC does not need them and they can leave residue.
• Dragging heavy furniture without protection.

Protecting the floor

• Use felt pads under furniture legs.
• Place doormats at entrances to catch grit and moisture.
• Use non-staining protectors under rolling chairs or heavy items.

Room by room: where dirt actually comes from

The same floor gets dirty differently in every room, so aim the effort where it pays. Entrances collect grit, which is the real enemy because it acts like sandpaper under shoes; a good doormat outside and a washable runner inside remove most of it before it travels. Kitchens deal in grease film and dropped food, so a slightly damp mop with a neutral cleaner matters more often there. Bathrooms are the easy case: the waterproof core shrugs off splashes, so the job is just drying standing water off the surface and keeping soap residue from building a dull film.

Removing specific marks without damaging the surface

Most stubborn marks come off SPC with patience rather than force. Rubber heel scuffs usually lift with a dry microfibre cloth or a clean tennis ball rubbed over the mark. Grease responds to a neutral cleaner left to sit for a minute before wiping. Ink, marker and hair dye should be treated promptly with a cloth dampened in the mildest product that works, testing in a hidden corner first. What you must not reach for is acetone, solvent thinners or abrasive powder; they can dull the UV coating, and once the sheen is scrubbed away in one patch it cannot be polished back.

A deep-clean rhythm that takes one afternoon a season

Daily and weekly cleaning keeps the surface presentable; a seasonal pass keeps it new. Move the light furniture, vacuum the perimeters and under radiators where dust mats form, wash the floor with fresh solution rather than the tired water from the first bucket, and check felt pads under chair legs while everything is shifted. It is also the moment to inspect high-traffic lanes: if the finish there looks flatter than under the sofa, add a runner or rotate a rug before the difference grows.

Cleaning after building work

Renovation dust is a special case because plaster and cement fines are abrasive and alkaline. Never dry-sweep it hard across the floor; vacuum first with a soft-brush head, then damp-mop in stages, rinsing the mop constantly so you are not dragging a slurry around. Paint splatter on SPC usually peels or wipes off while fresh; dried spots soften with warm soapy water rather than scraping. If trades are still coming through, lay protective board over the walk routes instead of taped plastic sheet, which traps grit underneath and grinds it in.

How maintenance differs in commercial spaces

In a shop, clinic or office, cleaning is about frequency and matting, not stronger chemicals. Entrance matting long enough to take several footsteps strips most grit and moisture at the door. Daily dust-mopping plus damp-mopping with a neutral cleaner covers the rest; an auto-scrubber on the softest setting suits large areas. What facility teams should ban is the habit inherited from other floor types: no polish, no wax, no restorative buffing compounds. SPC with a factory UV coating is not designed to be recoated, and layered polish only builds a film that yellows and holds dirt.
