The History of Vinyl Flooring

Every floor you can click together today stands on 150 years of trial and error. A short history of how resilient flooring got here.

SPC feels like a recent invention, and it is — but it is the latest chapter in a long story of resilient floors, each generation fixing the failures of the one before. Knowing that story explains why modern floors are built the way they are, and why the market keeps moving toward rigid cores.

Linoleum: the natural ancestor

The story begins in the nineteenth century with linoleum — linseed oil, cork dust and pigments pressed onto a backing. It was durable and warm for its era and ruled floors for decades, but it demanded maintenance and its colours were limited by its materials.

Sheet vinyl: the post-war boom

PVC changed everything. By the mid-twentieth century, vinyl sheet flooring offered brighter designs, easier cleaning and lower cost, and it swept through post-war housing. Its weaknesses were also clear: a soft surface that dented and tore, and a look that never quite escaped being printed plastic.

LVT: vinyl learns realism

Luxury vinyl tile arrived as printing and embossing matured, cutting vinyl into planks and tiles with genuinely convincing wood and stone designs. Flexible LVT made vinyl respectable in design terms — but as a soft product, it telegraphed subfloor flaws and demanded near-perfect preparation.

Rigid core: WPC, then SPC

The 2010s answered with rigid cores. WPC used a foamed wood-polymer core for comfort; SPC followed with a denser limestone-polymer core that was thinner, more dent-resistant and more dimensionally stable. Combined with click locking — pioneered by companies like Unilin — the rigid plank became the fastest-growing floor in the world.

Where the story is now

Today's premium SPC adds what earlier generations lacked: Embossed In Register texture aligned to the print, UV-cured finishes, attached acoustic layers and licensed click systems, produced under certification like FloorScore and CE. The installation revolution: from trowel to click

For most of vinyl's history, the floor was married to the subfloor: sheet goods and early tiles went down in full-spread adhesive, laid by specialists, and removal meant scrapers and misery. The arrival of mechanical click locking, pioneered in laminate and licensed into vinyl, quietly changed who could own a new floor. Suddenly planks floated, DIY became realistic, and a floor could be lifted and relaid rather than demolished. MILAT builds on the licensed Unilin click system, a direct descendant of that revolution, and it is fair to say click did as much for vinyl's growth as any material advance.

How the surface learned to fool the eye and the hand

Early vinyl never pretended well: printed patterns were flat, repeats were obvious, and gloss betrayed the material at a glance. Print technology improved decade by decade, and embossing added generic texture, but the decisive step was registration, aligning the pressed texture with the printed grain so a knot you see is a knot you feel. That is EIR, Embossed In Register, and it moved vinyl from imitating wood at a distance to withstanding inspection at a fingertip. The floor learned to be quiet

Acoustics is the least told chapter of the story. Old resilient floors went down over concrete with nothing between, and apartment living was noisier for it. As floating floors spread, separate foam underlays appeared, an extra product and an extra installation step. The current generation integrates the solution: an acoustic layer factory-attached to the plank, like the IXPE backing on MILAT SPC with sound absorption up to 21 dB. What began as an afterthought sold in rolls became part of the plank itself, which is the pattern of this industry: every accessory eventually merges into the product.

Regulation wrote half the story

Vinyl's evolution was not driven by chemists alone; regulators and buyers kept raising the bar. Concerns over plasticisers pushed the industry toward phthalate-free formulations. Indoor air quality programmes such as FloorScore made low emissions a certifiable, purchasable property rather than a promise. In Europe, the Construction Products Regulation made Declarations of Performance a legal passport for every floor sold. Each rule change culled products that could not comply and rewarded manufacturers who invested ahead of it, which is a large part of how the category earned its way into schools, clinics and homes.

New geographies joined the story

The manufacturing map of vinyl has been redrawn several times: from the early American and European sheet producers, to the enormous concentration of rigid-core capacity in Asia in the 2010s, to the more diversified map emerging now as buyers weigh freight, lead times and supply risk alongside unit price. Türkiye's rise as a flooring origin belongs to this chapter, sitting between European demand and global logistics, inside the EU customs union framework for goods. Vinyl flooring rose to prominence in the mid-twentieth century as PVC replaced older materials like linoleum, which had dominated since the nineteenth century.

What came before SPC flooring?
