Angle-angle: the classic
In an angle-angle system, both the long side and the short side lock by tilting the plank into its neighbour and folding it down. It produces a strong, tight joint and is the most widely proven approach. The trade-off is that each plank needs room to be angled in, which slows work in tight spots like under door frames.
Drop-down (push-down) short sides
Drop-down systems keep the angled long side but let the short end lock by pressing it straight down until it clicks. Rows go in noticeably faster, and awkward last-row and doorway planks get easier. The short-side joint relies on a precisely milled locking element, so profile accuracy matters even more.
Fold-down with locking insert
The most developed drop-down variants add a separate insert or tongue in the short-side groove that snaps over the incoming plank, boosting the vertical strength of the pressed joint. These systems combine the speed of drop-down with joint strength closer to angle-angle.
What matters more than the type: the licence
Click geometries are patented engineering, licensed by their developers to manufacturers. A licensed profile is produced to the licensor's specification with the tolerances the design assumes. Unlicensed copies imitate the shape without the discipline — and the difference shows up as joints that gap, peak or fail under traffic. Angle-angle joints open the way they closed, by lifting the row and rotating out, which makes lifting a floor for a leak, a repair or a house move genuinely practical.
