Most flooring articles are written by people who have never stood next to an extrusion line. We manufacture SPC flooring in Gaziantep, so this is the process as it actually happens on the factory floor — stage by stage, from raw mineral powder to the finished plank that clicks together in your project.

Stage 1: Mixing the core compound
SPC starts as a dry blend: finely ground limestone (calcium carbonate), PVC resin and stabilisers, dosed to a tightly controlled recipe. The mineral content is what gives the finished plank its rigidity, density and dimensional stability — get the ratio wrong and everything downstream suffers, from brittleness in cutting to joints that will not hold.
Stage 2: Extruding the rigid core
The compound is heated and forced through an extruder, coming out as a continuous rigid sheet — the stone-polymer core that gives SPC its name. Thickness is calibrated between rollers to fine tolerances, because a core that varies even slightly will telegraph through every later layer and show at the click joint.
Stage 3: Laminating the decor and wear layer
A printed decor film — the wood grain or stone pattern you see — is bonded to the core, followed by the transparent wear layer that protects it. Heat and pressure fuse the layers into a single board. The wear layer's thickness is chosen for the floor's intended traffic class, up to AC5 for heavy commercial use.
Stage 4: EIR embossing
This is where a premium floor separates itself. Embossed In Register (EIR) pressing uses plates aligned precisely with the printed design, so the physical texture follows the grain image beneath it — a knot you can feel where a knot is printed. Flat embossing is cheaper and faster; register embossing is what makes a plank read as timber.
Stage 5: UV coating and curing
The surface receives a UV-cured protective coat — MILAT applies a 2X UV coating — which hardens instantly under ultraviolet lamps. This layer resists scuffs and stains and keeps the decor from fading, and it is why a quality SPC floor never needs waxing or sealing.
Stage 6: Profiling the click
Cooled boards are cut to plank size and their edges are milled into the locking profile. This is precision machining: the licensed Unilin click geometry is cut to fine tolerances, because the joint's strength and tightness live entirely in that profile. An attached IXPE acoustic layer is bonded to the back.

Stage 7: Inspection and packing
Finished planks are checked for dimensions, locking fit, surface quality and colour consistency against the batch standard, then boxed, palletised and labelled with batch numbers for traceability. From here the order moves to export packing and shipping documentation.
Quality control is a thread, not a stage
The inspection table at the end of the line is only the last checkpoint of many. Real quality control starts at the silo: incoming PVC resin and stone powder are checked before they ever meet the mixer, because no downstream process can fix a bad compound. Along the line, operators monitor extrusion temperatures and sheet thickness continuously, lamination is watched for adhesion and alignment, and click profiles are gauged against tolerance samples through the run. Under ISO 9001, each batch leaves a paper trail, so a question about a floor years later can be traced back to a production day.
What separates a good line from a cheap one
Two factories can own similar machines and ship very different floors. The difference hides in choices the buyer never sees: the share of virgin polymer versus reground scrap in the core, the grade of stabilisers that keep the compound consistent, whether decor film comes from leading printers or the cheapest bidder, and how tightly the line is run rather than merely how fast. Cutting any of these saves money invisibly at the factory and expensively at the floor: brittle clicks, drifting colours between batches, wear layers that chalk early. Cheap SPC is rarely cheap by accident.
From design file to floor: how a decor is born
Every plank starts as artwork. A wood or stone visual is developed as a repeating print design, produced as decor film, and, in an EIR product, paired with an embossing plate whose relief follows that exact print, so the texture under your hand matches the grain under your eye. Colourways are tuned against physical proofs, not screens, because lamination and the wear layer both shift how a colour reads. Only when a pressed, coated, full-build sample passes review does a design enter a collection, which is why the 54 designs across MILAT's three collections each represent a long path from file to floor.
Why factories run trials before your production
When an order involves anything new, a fresh decor, a changed format, a custom colour, a good factory runs a trial batch first. Trial planks are built on the real line, then checked and often deliberately abused: joints assembled and stressed, surfaces tested, dimensions measured after temperature cycling. It feels slow to a buyer eager for production, but the trial is where surprises are cheap. A factory that resists trialling, or that offers to skip it to save time, is transferring that risk to your container, and it is worth asking who pays if the gamble fails.
The questions that reveal manufacturing quality
A buyer cannot audit chemistry from a brochure, but the right questions expose a factory quickly. Ask what share of the core is virgin material and where the decor film comes from. Ask how colour consistency is controlled between batches and how a claim from the field is investigated. Ask to see the click profile under magnification and the certificates behind the marketing: FloorScore for emissions, the ISO management systems, CE Declarations of Performance. Factories proud of their process answer with specifics and invitations; factories with something to economise answer with adjectives.
