SPC is one of the most forgiving floors you can buy, but like any floating floor it depends on being installed correctly. When an SPC floor does misbehave, the cause is almost always the subfloor, the acclimation or the fit — not the plank itself. Knowing the common problems and their real causes lets you avoid every one of them.

Peaking and gaps
Peaking (joints lifting into a small ridge) and gaps (joints pulling apart) are the classic floating-floor faults. They happen when the floor cannot expand and contract freely — usually because the perimeter expansion gap was left too small, or the planks were not acclimated to the room before laying. The fix is prevention: leave the correct expansion gap around every edge and let the flooring acclimate first.
Hollow or bouncy spots
A hollow sound or slight bounce underfoot means the subfloor beneath that spot is not flat. A rigid SPC plank bridges the dip, leaving an air gap. The solution is in the preparation: the subfloor must be levelled so it is flat within tolerance before the floor goes down.
Lifting or curling edges
Edges that lift usually point to trapped moisture from a damp subfloor, or an expansion gap that was covered by skirting or a heavy item pinning the floor. Check the subfloor is dry, keep the expansion gap clear, and avoid fixing heavy units through a floating floor.
Scratches and scuffs
SPC has a tough wear layer, but grit is abrasive and unprotected furniture legs drag. Use felt pads under furniture, place doormats at entrances to catch grit, and lift rather than drag heavy items. Light surface scuffs can often be buffed away.
Fading in strong sunlight
Any floor can lighten under years of intense, direct sunlight. A quality UV top coat slows this considerably. In rooms with very strong sun, blinds or sheer curtains during peak hours protect the colour over the long term.

Squeaks and clicks underfoot
A squeaking SPC floor is not the plank complaining; it is movement somewhere it should not be. The usual suspects are debris left on the subfloor grinding under the boards, a high spot the floor rocks over, or joints that were never fully locked and now rub as they flex. Trace the noise to its area, and if it sits near a wall, check first that skirting or trim has not been fixed through the flooring, pinning it. Persistent squeaks over a wavy subfloor only truly resolve by lifting that section and levelling, which the click system fortunately makes possible.
Stains that come from underneath objects
Some marks are chemical, not mechanical. Rubber-backed rugs, cheap mats and certain furniture feet can react with vinyl surfaces over time and leave a yellowish shadow that no cleaner removes, a process called antioxidant staining that affects the whole resilient flooring category. Prevention is the only cure: choose mats labelled safe for vinyl floors, use felt rather than rubber under furniture, and lift and move rugs occasionally. The same advice covers hair dyes, solvents and strong disinfectants; wipe aggressive chemicals up immediately rather than letting them sit.
Sunrooms, conservatories and extreme temperature swings
SPC is the most temperature-stable floor in the vinyl family, but glazed rooms are their own climate: afternoon heat behind glass, sharp cold on winter nights, sometimes in the same week. The floor can serve here, with discipline. Respect the expansion gap generously, keep large fixed loads from pinning the floor, and use shading to blunt the harshest solar gain. In fully unheated spaces that freeze, follow the manufacturer's stated temperature range rather than assumptions. Most sunroom failures blamed on flooring turn out to be a standard indoor installation put into a non-standard climate.
Damaged click joints: the installer's own goal
A click profile is precise machining, and it only works undamaged. Driving planks together with a bare hammer, forcing a misaligned joint, or repeatedly opening and closing the same connection can bruise the locking edge, and a bruised joint holds neither tight nor flat. The symptom appears later as a gap or a lip along one seam while the rest of the floor sits perfectly. During installation, use a tapping block and pull bar, and if a joint resists, stop and find out why; the resistance is information, usually debris or misalignment, never a lack of force.
Diagnose before you blame: reading a floor like a claims inspector
When a floor misbehaves, the pattern tells the story. Problems along one wall point to expansion gaps or pinned edges; problems in traffic lanes point to subfloor flatness; problems near glass point to heat; problems everywhere at once point to product or a fundamentally wrong installation. Photograph the symptom, note where and when it appears, and check the simple causes before lifting anything. Manufacturers see this daily, and a clear description with photos gets a useful answer fast, while a floor torn up in frustration destroys the evidence that would have solved it.
