Stairs are the exception to almost everything you know about SPC. On a flat floor the planks float free with click joints and an expansion gap. On a staircase you can't have any of that — a step that clicks, shifts or lifts underfoot is a fall waiting to happen. Stair treads get bonded down solid, cut to fit each step, and finished with a nosing at the front edge. It's more fiddly than a floor, and it's worth taking slow.

Glue down, don't float
Every tread and riser on a staircase is bonded to the step with a suitable flooring adhesive — no floating, no click-only fit. Stairs take concentrated foot traffic on a small area and any movement is a hazard. The click mechanism isn't structural here; the adhesive holds the piece, and you cut each plank to the step rather than relying on the locking joint.
The stair nosing does the hard work
The nosing is the shaped trim that wraps the front lip of each step, where wear and slips happen most. It gives the edge a finished, rounded profile, protects the tread front, and provides grip where your foot lands. Use a nosing made to match the flooring — colour-matched profiles exist for exactly this. Fix it firmly; a loose nosing is the most dangerous thing on a stair.
Measure every step — they're not identical
Old staircases are rarely uniform. Measure each tread and riser individually rather than cutting a batch to one size, because depths and widths drift step to step. Dry-fit each piece before you commit adhesive.

Safety and product limits
Grip matters most on stairs. MILAT SPC carries an EIR textured surface and an AC5 wear rating, which suits a high-traffic staircase, but always confirm a given product and profile is approved for stair use in MILAT's installation guidance before you start — not every plank format is intended for treads, and the right nosing has to be available to finish it safely.
Sequence the stairs into the whole job
Decide early whether stairs come before or after the main floors, because the answer changes daily life on site. Most fitters run the landing and upstairs rooms first, then work the staircase top-down so they never trap themselves, finishing at the hallway below. If the house is occupied, plan the staircase for a stretch when people can use another route or stay off it while adhesive cures, and agree that window with the household before the first plank is cut. A staircase done in a rush around family traffic is where most stair jobs go wrong.

Substrate prep is stricter than on floors
A floating floor forgives small subfloor sins; a glued stair forgives none. Adhesive bonds only to sound, clean, dry material, so every tread needs old carpet gripper, staples, paint splashes and dust gone completely. Timber treads that flex should be screwed down solid; concrete steps with crumbling edges need repair mortar and full curing first. Porous surfaces may need priming per the adhesive maker's instructions. The rule of thumb: if you would not sticker-tape a poster to it, do not glue a floor to it.
Winders, curves and awkward staircases
Straight flights are the easy case. Winders, kite steps and curved flights each demand a cardboard or MDF template per step, transferred carefully to the plank, because no two are the same shape and eyeballing tapers is how gaps happen. Curved nosings are the real constraint: rigid aluminium or SPC-matched nosings only follow gentle sweeps, so tightly curved stairs may need flexible profiles or a segmented approach. If your staircase has more template steps than straight ones, weight your budget toward labour; the material is the cheap part of that job.
Make the stairs match the floor they meet
A staircase connects two floors, and mismatched batches announce themselves nowhere more cruelly than on ten steps in a stairwell window's raking light. Order stair material together with the adjoining floors, from the same batch, and set aside the cleanest planks for treads since they sit at eye level. With an EIR-textured design, keep grain direction consistent step to step. Small discipline, large payoff: a staircase that reads as a continuation of the floor rather than an afterthought stapled between two rooms.
Living with SPC stairs long-term
Wear on a staircase concentrates on a strip a few centimetres behind each nosing, where every foot lands in the same spot. A wear layer rated up to AC5 handles that concentration in a home for many years, but you can help it: felt the underside of anything carried up regularly, keep grit swept off treads since it acts like sandpaper underfoot, and check nosings occasionally for loosening screws or lifted edges. A nosing that moves is both a wear problem and a trip hazard, and tightening it early is a five-minute job.
Light the stairs the floor deserves
Stairs are the one place a floor is also a safety surface, and lighting is part of that job. A staircase lit only from the landing above throws every tread edge into its own shadow, which is uncomfortable on any floor and unfair to a dark decor. Consider a low-level wall light or an LED strip under the nosing line, and choose tread and riser tones with enough contrast that each step reads clearly at a glance; a single dark decor on both faces can flatten the flight visually. This is also where an EIR-textured, matt surface helps twice: grip underfoot and no glare bouncing off a glossy tread into descending eyes.
