This one gets oversold in both directions. Some sellers call SPC green because it is made partly from natural limestone; some critics dismiss it outright because it contains PVC. Both are too simple. Here is where SPC genuinely helps the environment, where it does not, and how to judge a specific supplier.

Start with the honest part: it is PVC-based
An SPC core is limestone powder bound with polyvinyl chloride. PVC is a petroleum-derived plastic, and no amount of marketing changes that. So SPC is not a plant-based or carbon-neutral material, and any claim that it is should make you sceptical. What can be said fairly is narrower and more useful: SPC can be a low-impact choice over its full life if it lasts a long time, emits little indoors, and is made in a controlled process. Those are real benefits, but they sit alongside the plastic content, not instead of it.
Where SPC earns its environmental case
Durability is the strongest argument. A floor you replace every few years carries the footprint of manufacturing and shipping each time; a floor that lasts decades spreads that impact thin. SPC with an AC5 wear rating and a tough UV topcoat is built for heavy traffic, and because it is 100% waterproof it survives spills and damp rooms that would ruin wood or laminate. A licensed reversible click also means planks can be lifted and reused rather than smashed out.

Recyclability: possible, but be realistic
SPC is technically recyclable. Factory offcuts and production scrap are commonly reground and fed back into cores, and rigid PVC is one of the more recyclable plastics in principle. The realistic caveat is end-of-life collection. Kerbside programmes rarely take flooring, and a multi-layer plank with a decor film and acoustic pad is harder to recycle than a single-material product. So treat closed-loop factory recycling as real and today's post-consumer recycling as limited and location-dependent. Anyone promising effortless recycling of a worn floor is overstating it.
What ISO 14001 and product passports actually tell you
ISO 14001 is an environmental management standard. It does not certify that a product is green; it certifies that the manufacturer runs a documented system to measure, control, and reduce its environmental impact, and gets audited on it. That is meaningful because it separates a factory that manages waste, emissions, and energy deliberately from one that does not. MILAT holds ISO 14001 and issues an SHI Product Passport, which supports traceability of what goes into the board.

How to compare suppliers fairly
Since the material is broadly the same across the category, the environmental differences come from the factory and the honesty of the claims. Ask for the certificates by name, ask what recycled content actually goes into the core rather than accepting a round number, and weigh shipping distance. A floor made closer to your market travels fewer sea miles, which is a genuine if modest factor. For European buyers, Türkiye's proximity means shorter freight than East Asian sourcing.
The fair verdict: SPC is a durable, low-emission floor with a genuine plastic footprint. If longevity and indoor air quality matter to your project and you buy from a certified, transparent maker, it is a defensible choice. If you want a plant-based or fully compostable floor, SPC is not it, and no honest supplier will pretend otherwise.
Longevity is the biggest green lever
The most environmentally expensive floor is the one you replace early. Every replacement means new raw material, new freight, new adhesive and a skip of waste, so a floor's service life quietly outweighs most other line items in its footprint. This is where specification becomes an environmental decision: a wear layer matched to the traffic, a licensed click that stays tight, and a UV coating that keeps the surface cleanable all push replacement further into the future. A floor rated up to AC5 doing fifteen quiet years in a corridor is greener in practice than a fragile floor with a prettier brochure.
Indoor air and carbon are different questions
Buyers often treat eco-friendly as one checkbox when it is at least two. FloorScore certification addresses indoor air: it verifies low VOC emissions, which is about the health of the room the floor sits in. Carbon and resource footprint are a separate ledger covering raw materials, energy, freight and end of life, which is the territory of ISO 14001 management and environmental product documentation. A floor can score well on one and poorly on the other. Ask for both kinds of evidence and keep them in separate mental columns; a seller who blurs them is selling, not informing.
Freight miles count too
SPC is heavy, and heavy goods carry their transport with them environmentally as well as commercially. A container travelling a short sea route emits less than the same container crossing half the planet, so for European, Middle Eastern and North African buyers, sourcing from Türkiye rather than East Asia trims the transport line of the footprint while shortening the supply chain's exposure to disruption. It is not the largest slice of a floor's lifecycle impact, but it is one of the few slices a buyer controls entirely with a single sourcing decision.

The floating install is quietly circular
An overlooked virtue of a glue-free floor: it comes up the way it went down. A floated SPC floor with an intact Unilin click can be lifted plank by plank, moved, and relaid in another room or another property, something a glued or grouted floor cannot offer. Landlords use this when reconfiguring units; retailers use it for showroom displays. It also makes end of life cleaner, because planks come up unmixed with adhesive residue, which is exactly the condition recyclers need material in. Design for disassembly is a fashionable phrase; a click floor simply is one.
Low-maintenance is low-impact
A floor's environmental account stays open for its whole life, and cleaning is a recurring entry. Floors that demand waxes, oils, polishes or aggressive chemistry keep a small stream of products and packaging flowing for decades. SPC closes most of that stream: the 2X UV-cured surface needs nothing beyond dry sweeping and a damp mop with a neutral cleaner, no periodic refinishing, no sealing, no stripping. Multiply a simpler regime across years and across a whole school or apartment block, and the saved chemicals, water and labour become a real quantity. It rarely appears in green marketing because it is unglamorous, which is exactly why it is worth counting.

- What is the stabiliser and plasticiser system, and is it free of substances restricted in my market?
