Two SPC planks can share the same thickness, the same wear layer and the same photo — and still behave like different products. The difference is usually density: how much mineral is packed into every cubic centimetre of the core. As a manufacturer, we treat core density as a first-order quality decision, because it quietly controls almost everything a buyer later praises or complains about.

What density actually controls
- Dent resistance — a denser core pushes back against furniture legs, heels and dropped objects.
- Click strength — the locking profile is milled into the core itself; denser material holds a crisper, stronger joint.
- Dimensional stability — high mineral content moves less with temperature, keeping seams tight.
- Screw and fastening grip at trims and transitions, where fittings bite into the core.
- Cutting behaviour — dense boards cut clean; underfilled boards crumble and chip at the blade.
Where low density hides
Underfilled core is one of the easiest places for a factory to cut cost, because it is invisible in a photograph and even in a showroom. The plank looks identical; the recipe simply carries less limestone and more filler or air. The problems surface later — joints that loosen, corners that crush in transit, edges that chip during installation. By then the container is paid for.
How a buyer checks density without a lab
Weight is the honest witness. Ask the supplier for the weight per square metre of the exact product, then weigh your sample and do the arithmetic against its dimensions. Compare candidate samples of the same thickness directly in hand — the difference between a dense and an underfilled core is obvious once you have felt both. Then look at a cut edge: dense core shows a fine, uniform section; poor core looks grainy and porous.

Simple hands-on tests on a sample
- Press a fingernail or key edge into the core side — a dense core barely marks.
- Click two planks and pull them apart repeatedly — the joint should stay crisp, not loosen.
- Cut a strip with a utility knife score-and-snap — the break should be clean, not crumbly.
- Compare the weight of equal-size samples from competing suppliers.
Density and the click: an engineering relationship
A locking profile is only as strong as the material it is cut from. The licensed Unilin click that MILAT mills into its planks is engineered around the core's mechanical properties — which is exactly why a genuine licence and a controlled, high-mineral recipe belong together. Copy the geometry into a soft core and the joint measures the same but does not hold the same.
How MILAT controls density at the source
Density is decided at the mixing station, not the inspection bench. MILAT doses limestone, PVC and stabilisers to a fixed recipe under ISO 9001 process control, and the extruded core is monitored through calibration so every batch carries the mineral content the click, the wear rating and the stability spec assume. Buyers can request the technical data sheet — including weight per square metre — with any sample or quotation, and verify it on delivery.
